About Community/Collective Kitchens

Community Kitchens consist of a group of people who get together on a regular basis to cook healthy, low cost meals. Each kitchen is set up a little bit differently, to whatever best meets the needs of the participants. Groups may focus on basic food skills, while others may focus on a certain type of food or cooking technique. Kitchens can be based around the interests and needs of the group as well as food preferences or dietary restrictions.

Current Community Kitchens

Notre Dame Community Kitchen

This kitchen prepares 2-3 recipes and food is taken home in containers that are brought by the participant. The cost is $6/person/serving - For example: preparing 3 recipes for a family of 4 would cost $24 for a total of 12 servings.  This kitchen is supported by the Knights of Columbus. This kitchen is open to new members. Children ages 10+ are welcome to participate providing they are supervised by a parent.

The Flats Community Kitchen

Do you live in the Flats and are interested in preparing meals with a group? This is a great opportunity to learn new skills and build friendships in your community! This community kitchen prepares 2-3 recipes and food is taken home in containers that are brought by the participant. This kitchen is open to new members. Children ages 10+ are welcome to participate providing they are supervised by a parent.

Westminster Community Kitchen

Learn cooking skills and how to prepare healthy low cost meals at this community kitchen. This kitchen prepares 2-3 recipes and food is taken home in containers that are brought by the participant. This kitchen is open to new members. Children ages 10+ are welcome to participate providing they are supervised by a parent.

Southview Community Kitchen

Would you like to learn how to stretch your food budget by preparing healthy and delicious meals in a welcoming group environment? This community kitchen prepares 2-3 recipes and food is taken home in containers that are brought by the participant. This kitchen is open to new members. St. Mary's Community Kitchen

Cook as a family at this community kitchen where you will learn how to prepare healthy, low cost meals. Food is taken home in containers that are brought by the participant. This kitchen is open to new members. Children ages 10+ are welcome to participate providing they are supervised by a parent.

"Big Cook" Kitchen

The "Big Cook" is a meal planning and preparation method where you prepare freezer meals in bulk. You spend 1 day preparing up to 200 meals which allows you to eat healthy, home-made meals while still accommodating a busy lifestyle. As you can imagine, due to the bulk quantity of food being purchased and prepared, there is a significant up-front cost for this kitchen. Please arrange with the contact person below for pre-payment of supplies and to register for the meal preparation days. This kitchen is open to new members.

Francophone Kitchen

Meet with other French speakers or those interested in French to prepare a variety of delicious foods such as French Christmas baking and crepes. For dates, times and cost of the next kitchen, please contact Marie-Anna. This kitchen is open to new members.

BIRS (Brain Injury Relearning Services) Kitchen

The BIRS Kitchen provides clients with an opportunity to learn cooking skills and build community by preparing and eating meals together. This kitchen is open to BIRS clients.

Location: St. John's Presbyterian Church - 504 2 Street SE

Time: 9am-1pm on the third Monday of the month

Bridges Family Programs Kitchen

The participants take home multiple servings as well as having a chance to get to know one another better by having a sit-down lunch to enjoy the fruits of their labor. This kitchen is open to Bridges clients. Childcare is provided.

Pregnancy & Family Support Centre

Menu planning, budgeting and cooking are all covered in a community kitchen open to those who attend the Centre. This kitchen is open to Pregnancy & Family Support Centre registered participants. Childcare is provided for children ages 0-2.

Saamis Immigration Services Kitchen

This kitchen is for newcomers to Canada and community volunteers, who are interested in sharing their cultural cuisine as well as learning to adapt their recipes to readily available Canadian produce. This kitchen is open to newcomers to Canada.

Medicine Hat College Residence Kitchen

The student participants cook and share a meal and then divide the remaining food to take home. This kitchen is open to Medicine Hat College students living in residence.

Miywasin Teen Kitchen

The Miywasin Teen Kitchen runs two Fridays a month from 4-7pm. This kitchen is open to new members.

Youth Action Society Community Kitchen

The Youth Action Kitchen runs in conjunction with the Miywasin Teen Kitchen one Friday evening a month. Please contact the number below for specific dates and times. This kitchen is open to new members.

Redcliff Youth Centre Kitchen

This kitchen is run out of the Redcliff Youth Centre and allows the youth who access the centre a chance to learn how to cook.

Location: Redcliff Youth Centre - 19 Main Street S, Redcliff

Time: This program takes place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings beginning at 4:30pm.

Kitchen Workshops

Community Kitchen workshops are a great way to learn skills that may seem a little intimidating to try on your own. Follow along with an experienced instructor as they teach you skills that you will be able to then use at home to feed your family and friends. You will be able to take home a portion of what you have prepared at the workshop.

Workshops typically are held on a Saturday morning. The average cost to participate in a workshop is $10/person.

Want To Start Your Own?

If you have a love for cooking and want to share your passion with others we can help you start your own community kitchen! The focus, structure, timing, location, etc. is flexible. The Food Security Coordinator will help you get set up and be alongside you when you need help or have questions.

CFCA can help with:

  • * Finding a location (including insurance)
  • * Help with advertising
  • * Create a 'staples' pantry
  • * Conduct food safety and kitchen leader workshops
  • * Help create a budget, grocery shop and provide recipes

We are always looking for volunteers willing to lead a kitchen or teach a skill! Please contact the Food Security Coordinator if you would like to participate in this way.
